Age of Empires appears to be similar to Starcraft/Warcraft in the way you build buildings, gather resources, create more units/people.
However, the game breaks away from that mold into new territory with the various historical ages you go through. With this dimension and the historical notes, I found it intellectually stimulating as well as challenging as a game. My 13-year-old also enjoys developing his own maps, letting creativity have a day all to its own.
I'd highly recommend this game to j ust about anyone. And if you're wanting a break from Starcraft/Warcraft but want to stay within familiar territory, then get a hold of Age of Empires II: Gold Edition.
