The Blazers led by as much as 16 points in the first half, but they let that big lead dwindle to a 39-30 advantage at intermission. At the end of the third frame, Torrington was up 46-39. Walker wins title, L-FL finishes 12th CASPER – Lingle-Fort Laramie senior Todd Walker captured the state championship at 138 points and led the Doggers to a 12th-place finish at the state wrestling tournament in Casper over the weekend. “It’s kind of bitter sweet,” Walker said after his title win. “It feels good to win state but it’s my last year.
I’m done in high school so I don’t really know (how I feel).” In the championship match, Walker took on Glenrock’s Garrett Schwindt, a wrestler with a 44-10 record this winter. The Dogger struck first, scoring two points on a takedown before Schwindt sprung a leak and the match was stopped for a blood timeout. Schwindt got an escape and started bleeding again to force another stoppage. At the end of the first period, Walker led 2-1. In the second period, Schwindt recorded an escape and knotted the match at 2 heading into the final period.
In the final period, there was another blood stoppage, before Walker recorded a takedown and Schwindt got an escape. Walker managed to not give up any points to secure the championship win, 4-3. Lady Cyclones win consolation championship CASPER – The Southeast Lady Cyclones lost their opening game in Casper in the 2A State tournament against Rocky Mountain, 44-38, before beating Lovell 41-29 and Greybull 47-35 to take home the consolation championship. Rocky Mountain 44, Southeast 38 The Lady Cyclones jumped out to a 9-6 lead after the first frame, capitalizing on their early momentum for an 18-17 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Southeast put up 10 in each quarter, while Rocky Mountain poured in 14 and 13 to snag the win. “Thursday our first-round game was tough.
We were evenly matched but we didn’t shoot the ball very well and that was the main problem in the game,” coach Jennifer Scheer said. “We played pretty good defense on them. At the end of the day, we just couldn’t put up the points to win.” L-FL girls cap season with consolation championship CASPER – The Lingle-Fort Laramie Lady Doggers ended their season with a win over Rock River in the consolation championship at the state tournament in Casper after falling to Encampment and beating Kaycee. “The character of these kids is unparalleled,” coach Matt Cornelius said. “They could have easily tanked after they couldn’t achieve the goal set at the beginning of the season of winning a championship, but they didn’t.” Encampment 51, L-FL 36 In L-FL’s first game of the tournament, the Lady Doggers struggled to rack up the points, scoring two in the first and six in the second for 15 percent shooting to Encampment’s 22 first-half points.
Lady Lancers fall one win short SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – The Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers played their way into their first Region IX championship game since 1979 but fell to Western Nebraska in the finals to finish as the runner-ups in Scottsbluff, Neb. WNCC roared back to take an 11-10 lead heading into the second. The shots from deep started falling for EWC in the second, with Evans hitting two and Carna Prokic hitting one early in the frame to put the Lady Lancers up 21-16. Evans had EWC’s final seven points of the first half, as the Lady Lancers held a 31-28 advantage at the break.
“The more success you have the more shots you hit,” Anderson said of EWC’s run in the second and into the third quarter. “We played some great defense during that stretch as well.” Trailblazers win consolation championship at state tourney CASPER – The Torrington Trailblazers boys’ basketball team suffered a loss in the opening round of the 3A State Tournament to Lyman, but battled back to win the consolation championship in Casper over the weekend. The Eagles outscored Torrington 15-8 in the second to trim the lead to one point by halftime. The Blazers built a four-point lead in the third and went into the fourth up 40-38. THS names new head volleyball coach TORRINGTON – Chelsi Jackson, a 2008 graduate of Torrington High School, has ascended to the top of the volleyball program, taking over as the head coach for the upcoming fall season.
“I’m very, very excited to get to be apart of this program – again,” Jackson said. “I played at Torrington High School and now I get to coach at the highest level here.” Since graduating in 2008, Jackson is no stranger to volleyball in Goshen County. Last fall, she was the JV coach for the Lady Trailblazers. She also spent two years coaching at Eastern Wyoming College. Before her time at EWC and THS, Jackson coached volleyball at Torrington Middle School. Blazer boys finish second at state tournament SHERIDAN – The Torrington Trailblazers boys soccer team advanced to the state championship game for the first time in school history, falling one goal short in a 1-0 loss Saturday against Cody in Sheridan. The Blazers gave up a goal in the 14th minute against the Broncos and were unable to recover.

Harris breaks 27-year record CASPER – Torrington’s Logan Harris broke a 27-year overall state record in the shot put with a put of 63 feet, 8.5 inches Saturday at the state track meet in Casper. “Every time I go to practice and I look out there I was like ‘I can get that.’ I look at that mark and I think ‘I can get that.’” Harris said. “That’s what I thought when I came here. Logan Milligan and Coley Nicholls sat fifth in the team roping standings after the first two days of action. All of the team ropers competed both Monday and Tuesday, with each pairing’s third run coming during a performance throughout the week.
Torrington’s Harris wins Milward Simpson award TORRINGTON -– Torrington’s Logan Harris was named the 2017 boys’ Milward Simpson winner, earning him the distinction as the best boys’ athlete in the state from the 2017 graduating class. In the 42 years the honor has been awarded, Harris is the first Torrington boy that has been recognized. Throughout his high school career, the Blazer was named all-conference three times and all-state seven times. In football, Harris cracked onto the varsity field as a freshman and continued to develop each year, playing on both offense and defense starting as a sophomore. During his senior campaign, Harris averaged 16.8 defensive points and 6.6 tackles per game. Throughout the 2016 season, he accounted for 8.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, four pass breakups a fumble recovery and a blocked kick. He earned all-state twice for his work on the gridiron.
Cubs rally for championship TORRINGTON – The Cubs rallied after trailing 10-4 heading into the sixth inning to force extras, snagging an 11-10 win in the Little League city tournament championship game Wednesday. The Cubs’ bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth, with Mac Hibben, Ryder Hackbarth, Bryce Hager, Alyssa Albaugh, Ty Albaugh and Zabdiel Munoz all came across to score in the frame. Hager hit a three-run moon shot in the inning to help propel the Cubs’ rally.
The game was tied at 10 after the sixth inning, forcing the game to go to extras. In the top of the seventh, the Yankees were unable to plate any runners, opening the door for the Cubs. Emmett Coxbill took the plate with two runners on base. His single allowed Hackbarth to come around and score for the walk-off win.
