Magic Camera For Mac
Hi Guys, As you might know, Black Magic has come out with a Cinema Camera which shoots to SSD (Solid State Drives). I've seen some footage off the camera and it is amazing. Anyway, at this point in time there are few options for attaching the SSD drive to your Mac for video ingest.
I found a SSD to USB 3 (backward compatible to USB 2) device for $29.00. In the future, I'm sure that there will be Thunderbolt devices to slot the SSD into, but for now, this little guy is very inexpensive and it works. Hi Ken, I have used a BMD camera for some tests and I was not really impressed. I agree the overall picture quality is excellent, but working with this thing is a drag.
These are my first impressions: The ergonomics are terrible, this camera really needs a rig and most rigs are not fit for serious work. Sunday I was at a huge event where there were about 20 camera teams. Only one crew used a rigged DSLR and I felt sorry for them. The whole camera entrapment followed by a separate sound recorder not only slowed them down, it also bothered the other people around them and eventually they were sent away. The BMD doesn't have XLRs, only 1/4 inch jacks. This means you need separate audio recording or expensive add-ons. The micro 4/3 mount is passive, so no iris control, which is a huge bummer.
Solved: I installed my Internet Security Complete and never got a browser toolbar or a question asking if I wanted one, which makes the whole 'password manager' concept pointless. How can I get my toolbar? I've tried inserting my installion disk to no avail. I cannot locate 'List' as a choice under the Data menu. I have tried to go to View on the menu bar, point to Toolbars, and then find List as a selection. 
Recently my Firefox stopped showing the little dropdown on the Webroot icon. When I click the icon, it asks for login to the Webroot website. It no longer shows the icon on PW fields and does not fill in any user ID or PW. Firefox 40.0.2. A toolbar is a menu of options and functions located on a program window, typically found below the title bar and menu bar. Toolbars have functionality unique to the program they are found in. Early on in computer development, this bar was called the 'ribbon,' similar to a typewriter ribbon.
The camera has bad rolling shutter issues. I really hope they can improve the form factor and the shutter issues because as I said the picture quality is very good. Yet not as good as the picture quality of an (expensive) professional video camera. And that's the biggest argument in favor of this camera: it is ridiculously cheap. But as Joe rightfully said: cheaper isn't always better.

Just my 2 cents. Best wishes, Ronny. Hi Ronny, I agree with your assessment about the ergonomics of the camera and it's very strange indeed. This camera was not designed for hand held shooting and putting it on a mobile rig is not going to help.
This camera must be shot on sticks. There are other issues like the 1/4' audio jacks and as Steve pointed out, no audio VU meters (how is that possible). I would definitely wont an on screen Waveform monitor. Some of these issue could be addressed with a 'firmware' update, others would require V2 of the camera. For me, one important thing is the crop factor. When putting still camera lenses on the camera, the crop factor is 2.3.

This is great for tele work but awful for wide angle. BM will ship a MFT version of the camera. If you use standard still camera lenses, the crop factor will still be 2.3, but I wondering what the crop factor would be if you used MFT lenses on the camera. Having said all this, I have footage here shot by Rick Young in both Australia and the UK, using older Canon and Nikkor manual AI glass and it is so very impressive for a $3,000.00 camera. The fact that it shoots ProRes HQ and 2.5 k raw, is also another plus.
Can this camera compete with the high end cameras, obviously no? Joe said 'Of course as we all know, cheaper isn't always better.' But in this case, I think that for a $3,000.00 camera, this has excellent value. And don't forget, there are people like me who have bags full of spectacular Nikkor AI glass, just looking for something to do. (g) I can't think of any other camera in this price range that gives the video quality that the MBCC does, nothing even comes close. Yes, BM does listen to it's customers and V2 of the camera will be much improved, but until then, V1, (the shipping version), does it for me.

I completely agree. When building a camera they have to get the camera right and they have to get the video quality right. Yes, the BMCC needs work but to my way of thinking, they got the most important part right, really surprising video quality for a camera of this price. I do believe that the rest will come.
And this camera does open a lot of doors for people at the lower end of the food chain.
